Recreation
There is no shortage of attractions in the greater Richmond area. Performing arts organizations include the Richmond Ballet, the Richmond Symphony, the Virginia Opera, Theatre IV, and numerous productions at the Richmond's Landmark Theater. Local museums number over 30 and prominent museums like the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Science Museum of Virginia and the Children's Museum of Richmond are recognized worldwide. The Henrico County and Richmond area also has many outdoor activities for the whole family. With over 20 County parks, 30 golf courses, Richmond Intrnational Raceway, and numerous professional sports teams there are attractions for the whole family.
Theatre, Art and Museums
Henrico County has its own Cultural Arts Center and is home to many other art and museum venues such as the Virginia Aviation Museum, the Barksdale Theatre, and the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. The Richmond area also is home to the Virginia Fine Arts Museum, Virginia Historical Society, the Science Museum of Virginia, numerous civil war battlefield sites, and Henricus, the recreation of the 1611 English settlement, making Henrico County the site of America’s second oldest English settlement.
Sports
For sports enthusiasts, Henrico hosts multiple NASCAR events at Richmond International Raceway. There’s also a professional soccer team, the Richmond Kickers, playing in the stadium at the University of Richmond. Horse-racing fans can catch the thoroughbreds at nearby Colonial Downs.
Parks
Henrico County offers parks, programs and special events for every walk of life. The Division of Recreation and Parks' mission is to enhance the quality of life and to foster a sense of well being and community for the citizens of Henrico County.
With over 20 county parks, 72 playgrounds, 20 tennis courts, 151 baseball and softball diamonds, 48 basketball courts, and scores of organized sports teams for all ages, there is always plenty to do. Other programs include arts and crafts, dance, dog obedience, fitness, martial arts, nature programs, outdoor recreation, sign language and much more. In addition the James River provides a great whitewater experience with Class V rapids that are right in the heart of Downtown Richmond.
