In 2004, Qimonda expanded its manufacturing capability with the addition of a 120,000 square foot, 300mm clean room. Why Henrico County?
The labor pool was an enormous factor in Qimonda's decision to locate in Henrico County. Semiconductor technician courses at John Tyler and Jay Sargent Reynolds, two community colleges in Richmond, also contribute to the available workforce.

Southern States

What today is known as Southern States, one of the nation's largest farmer cooperatives, began more than 80 years ago in Richmond with $11,000 in capital, two employees and a second-hand typewriter. Prompting that modest start-up was the fact Virginia farmers didn't have a reliable supply of good quality seed. This economic need led some 150 farmers to form a cooperative called Virginia Seed Service that was better able to procure seed suited to Virginia's growing conditions. The cooperative began distributing feed in 1925, added fertilizer in 1926 and started handling farm supplies and petroleum a few years later. That early growth has resulted in a cooperative that today has more than $1.3 billion in sales and serves more than 300,000 farmers and other customers.

The organization began expanding its geographic territory in the early 1930s and changed its name to Southern States Cooperative. After moves into Delaware and Maryland in 1934 and West Virginia in 1941, service was extended to Kentucky in 1945 and to North Carolina in 1986. In 1998, Southern States purchased the wholesale and retail farm supply system of Gold Kist, Inc., and expanded into the deep South. In 2000, the cooperative acquired the wholesale business of Agway consumer dealers and added the New England states to its service area.

While production agriculture is Southern States' core business, the knowledge and expertise needed to serve that segment also means the cooperative is equipped to serve the needs of urban/suburban and rural lifestyle customers. Named as the Richmond area's best source for lawn and garden advice, Southern States provides the brands you trust and the people who know.
