Commuting

Commuting PatternsHenrico is one of only two counties in Virginia to own and operate its secondary road system giving it tremendous flexibility in designing and maintaining the road network. The excellent road system and transportation planning has created an infrastructure that allows some of the quickest commuting times in the country. The average commute time is about 21 minutes, the envy of many metro areas our size and larger.

Throughout Virginia our transportation system has been expertly designed and implemented by the Virginia Department of Transportation. This state agency is responsible for providing safe and efficient transportation for the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country. Interstates 64, 95 and 295 converge in Henrico creating a commuting and distribution network at the epicenter of the east coast.

The GRTC Transit System was incorporated in 1973 for the purpose of providing public transportation service in the greater Richmond area. GRTC provides fixed-route bus service, curb-to-curb paratransit (advanced reservation) service for disabled persons and specialized services such as CARE, C-VAN, LINK and RideFinders. GRTC also operates an excellent Park and Ride program throughout Henrico County.
